This specimen was lot 21200 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Netherlands - Germany. Holland. Ducat, ND (1573-74). Dutch Revolt Against Spain. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details Gold Shield; Countermark: EF Details. Rampant lion left within beaded oval border countermark applied to the obverse of a 1567 Heidelberg mint Pfalz-Simmern Ducat of Friedrich III (1557-76). An EXTREMELY RARE countermark host coin combination of a rare issue, probably UNIQUE. The countermark is somewhat uneven, though with a bold lion. Evidence of being cleaned long ago now lightly toned. An interesting issue with lots of character and cross over appeal." The Palatinate, on the border with France, was divided several times. The Pfalz-Simmern line, founded 1410, expired in 1685 and the county passed to Pfalz-Neuburg.
