from the Stack's Bowers 2019 NYINC sale, lot 43743
Monaco SB119-43743r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43743 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "MONACO. 3 Sols, 1734. Honore III (1733-95). NGC FINE-12. Two year type. Well circulated, yet impressively wholesome for the grade with deep tone on both sides and detail that remains visible through all the vital portions of the design. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II." The coinage of Monaco in the eighteenth century is scanty, mostly imitations of French or Sardinian coinage. The result was a mix of French and Italian denominations. Three deniers = one liard; 4 liards = one sol; 3 sols = one pezetta (shown here); 20 pezettas = one scudo. This type was struck 1734-35 and was accompanied by 8 deniers (KM 87) and 1½ sols (KM 88, 89).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.5 g, billon.

Catalog reference: KM-85.
