This specimen was part of lot 40519 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $4,169. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA. 2 Rupien, 1893. PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder. A very attractive coin with light toning and original surfaces. Very nice for this type." This type was struck 1893-94 for German East Africa to the standard of an Indian two rupees. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
