from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 40199
Colombia SB818-40199r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40199 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1785/4-SF 2 Escudos. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). Restrepo 62.27. AU-53 (PCGS). Warm orange, rose, and violet toning highlights are intensified by the superb luster, especially prominent on the reverse. The overdate characteristics are easily seen. A particularly pretty piece. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Glendining's sale of November 1971, lot 412." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1785-89 and is probably the most common two escudos of colonial Latin America. It represents a slight debasement from the prior type, which was .901 fine gold.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 49.2a, Fr-40, Restrepo 61.29.
