Steve Album sale 39, lot 1214
SA39-1214r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1214 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $570. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONG KONG: Victoria, 1840-1901, AE cent, 1875, variety with 14 pearls in left arch of crown, a lovely example, NGC graded MS64 RB." This type was struck 1863-1900 in substantial numbers but is not easy to find in nice condition. This subtype is listed for 1863-66, 1875-77. Hong Kong was seized by the British from China in 1842 and held by them until its return in 1997. In Hong Kong, 100 cents = 1 dollar; sterling coinage was never used there.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 + proofs, a better type.

Specification: 7.4 g, bronze, 27.8 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-4.1.
