This specimen was lot 1465 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), Cu liard à la vieille tête, 1770BB, Strasbourg. D/ T. l. à d. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Fleur de Coin, Provient de notre vente 94, 15 décembre 2007, 1440. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, copper liard of the old head of 1770, Strasbourg mint. Obverse: laureate head right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Uncirculated.)"
The specimen shown is a liard à la vieille tête minted at Strasbourg 1770-73 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was three deniers, ¼ sol or 1/480 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown[2], but a common date.
Specification: pure copper, 3.06 g, 20-22 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by C.-N. Röettiers, this specimen is 3,09 g.
