The écu à la cravate was struck 1672-85 in fairly large quantities but was the victim of repeated "reformations," where older écus were called in and restruck. As a result, the type is rare today. It was succeeded by the écu drapé à l'antique of 1684-87. Droulers[1] prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced over three times that of an écu à la mèche longue. This specimen was lot 1842 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €550 (about US$741 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Ecu à la cravate 1682, L, Bayonne. Min. justiert, winz. Zainende, sehr schön +. Das vorliegende Stück wird auch als "Ecu du Parlement" bezeichnet. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the necktie of 1682, Bayonne mint. Minor adjustment marks, clipped, very fine or better. This type is also called the "écu of Parliament.")"
Recorded mintage: 392,247[1].
Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, 37-41 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by F. Warin.
