This type was struck at the Philadelphia mint 1796-97. It is substantially rarer than the preceding flowing hair type and is one of the rarest United States coin types. Varieties exist with fifteen stars and sixteen stars on the obverse. The next issue of draped bust half dollars was in 1801 and used the large eagle reverse.
