Steve Album sale 55, lot 986

This specimen was lot 986 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AV 2 hryvni, 2003, The Smallest Golden Coin Series - Salamander, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, Proof. The speckled salamander, in the Caudate amphibious species, is the only type of salamander species in the fauna of Ukraine. It inhabits the mountain and submountain regions of the Carpathian mountains." The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the Karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovanetsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven. The only salamanders we can find referenced to the Ukraine are the Danube crested newt (Triturus dobrogicus) and the Northern crested newt (Triturus cristatus), which don't particularly resemble the beast depicted here.

Recorded mintage: 10,000 proofs.

Specifications: 1.24 g, 0.999 fine gold, 13.92 mm diameter, segmented reeded edge.
