Austrian Netherlands 1749(l) 2 liards
This specimen was lot 1304 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €140 (about US$195 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Maria Theresia (1740-1780), Cu dubbel oord, 1749, Brugge. Vz/ Bb. r. met parelkrans. Kz/ AD/ USUM/ BELGII/ AUSTR·. Zeldzaam. Krassen op kz. bijna Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, copper double liard of 1749, Bruges mint. Obverse: diademed bust to right with pearl necklace; reverse: inscription below crown. Reverse scratch, about Extremely Fine.)"
This double liard was struck 1749-53. The "(l)" in the page title refers to the lion mintmark on the reverse, signifying Bruges; a hand was used for Antwerp. On the death of Charles VI in 1740, the redoubtable Maria Theresia was crowned Archduchess of Austria and queen of Hungary but, being a woman, could not be given the imperial crown. Therefore, after much debate and a war fomented by Frederick the Great of Prussia, her husband Francis of Lorraine was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1745.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 7.5 g, copper, 27 mm diameter, engraved by Jacques Roëttiers, this specimen 7,68 g.
