The islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia were ruled by the Omanis since 1698 until 1860 when it gained independence from [[Oman]]. It subsequently fell under control of the British in 1890, and became part of [[Tanzania]] in 1964, when the later gained independence. 

This specimen is a bronze 1 pysa, type issued one year only (AH 1299).
