Sinkiang (Xinjiang) was for many years an autonomous region covering much of the western part of [[China]], and was center stage for the various ‘Silk Road’ routes connecting eastern China with Central Asia, the Middle East, and ultimately Europe. The region was made a province of China in 1884, and at about this time only three of the previous eight mints were operative (Kashgar, Tihwa, and Aksu). The shown example of a non-dated 5 miscals was struck at the Kashgar mint.
