Sinkiang (Xinjiang) was for many years an autonomous region covering much of the western part of China, and was center stage for the various ‘Silk Road’ routes connecting eastern China with Central Asia, the Middle East, and ultimately Europe. The region was made a province of China in 1884, and at about this time only three of the previous eight mints were operative (Kashgar, Tihwa, and Aksu). The shown example of a non-dated 5 miscals was struck at the Kashgar mint.
