This type was struck at Melbourne for the Australian territory of [[New Guinea]] in 1938 and 1945. Previous shillings were struck in 1935-36 in the name of George V. The scene of fierce fighting during World War Two, the region obtained its independence in 1975 as [[Papua New Guinea]].
