This specimen was lot 1902 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €380 (about US$555 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''ITALIE, NAPLES, Philippe II (1554-1598), AR mezzo ducato, s.d. D/ B. cuir. à d. A g., sigles IBR/VP. R/ Ecu couronné dans un cartouche orné. Belle patine. Très Beau.'' (kingdom of [[Italy, Naples & Sicily|Naples]], Philip II, 1554-98, undated silver half ducat. Obverse: armored bust right, assayer's initials below; reverse: crowned arms in an ornate cartouche. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"</blockquote> This type was struck for Philip II of Spain, he of the Spanish Armada. The Spanish ruled Naples until the death of the last Hapsburg in 1700.
