Zurich 1814-B 8 batzen
This specimen was lot 3167 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$600 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND, Stadt und Kanton Zürich, 8 Batzen 1814. Seltener Jahrgang. FDC. (canton of Zürich, eight batzen of 1814, Rare date, Uncirculated.)"
After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. Not until 1850 would a unified confederation mint her own coins and terminate the local issues. This eight batzen (or one-fifth thaler) was issued 1810 and 1814.
Reported Mintage: 108,000 for 1810 and 1814.
Specification: silver, this specimen 7.33 g.
