Sincona sale 102, lot 5629

This specimen was lot 5629 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$211 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ. Zürich. Stadt und Kanton. 5 Schilling 1656, Zürich. Selten. Randausbruch. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Zürich, five schilling of 1656, Zürich mint. Rare, Edge chipped, Very Fine-Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1656 only. The ten schillings which accompanied it (KM 86) was struck again in 1677 and 1700. At this time, one thaler was 72 schillinge. It's hard to tell if the flaws on this example are the result of circulation damage or careless production at the mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.88 g, billon, 26 mm diameter, this specimen 3.22 g.

Catalog reference: KM 85, Hürlimann 907. D.T. 1093, HMZ 2-1153a.
