Sincona sale 95, lot 4649

This specimen was lot 4649 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$3,049 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Dukat o. J. (17. Jhdt.), Zürich. Einköpfiger Adler mit Wappen. Rv. Stehender Kaiser nach rechts. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Felder stellenweise bearbeitet. Exemplar der Slg. Zuberbühler, Auktion SINCONA 16, Zürich, Oktober 2013, Los 6351. (Switzerland, canton of Zürich, undated ducat of the seventeenth century, Zürich mint. Obverse: single headed eagle with arms; reverse: standing emperor to right. Very rare, Good Very Fine, Fields partially tooled.)"

Altho the auctioneers attribute this to the seventeenth century, we feel that Numista's attribution of 1561 is more likely to be right, from the style. Also, the Swiss confederation left the empire in 1648, after which the emperor would no longer be cited.

Record mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.34 g.
