from Stack's Bowers 2017 NYINC sale, lot 2345

This specimen was lot 2345 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $3,995. The catalog description[1] noted, "CROATIA. Zara. 9 Francs 20 Centimes, 1813. NGC AU-55. Struck during the French occupation of the city (1807-13). Some rub on the eagle's breast, but quite well preserved with sharp detailed stamps." Dalmatia, long Venetian territory, fell to the Austrians in 1797, then to Napoleon's empire in 1807, then back to Austria 1813-1918. It is currently part of Croatia. During the siege mentioned above, the French struck one, two and four ounce pieces. All are rare.
