Zambia 1972 20 ngwee
The first specimen was lot 73639 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "ZAMBIA. 20 Ngwee, 1972. London or Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just one specimen, this dazzling minor offers incredible brilliance and eye appeal that is quite engaging. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Zambia seceded from the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in October 1964. A set of sterling coinage was issued in 1966. Zambia converted to decimal coinage in 1969 and this type was issued 1968, 1972, 1978, 1983 and 1987-88, whereupon the denomination was suspended. Zambia has not issued any coinage for circulation since a five kwacha of 1992 (KM 31). The reverse features a Bohur reedbuck.
