The Federation of South Arabia was an attempt by the British to install a friendly regime in and around their former colony of Aden. Many of the surrounding protectorate states joined the new nation. Independence was achieved in 1967. In 1970, a pro-marxist group overthrew the government and the country was renamed Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen. Shown is a copper-nickel 50 fils.
