Wurzburg in 1648

This specimen was lot 692 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $63,250. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Wurzburg. 10 Ducat, 1707. Exceptional Wurzburg Gold 10 Ducats. Johann Philipp II, Von Greiffenklau (1699-1719). VERY RARE. Produced from the same dies used to strike silver talers of this issue. This is most evident from the hairline die break on the reverse that runs from six to seven O’clock though the clouds on the reverse. It is evident that this gold 10 ducat was struck very early as the die break is more pronounced and there are obverse die cuds on most of the silver issues produced with these dies. Struck with precision on a well made planchet, displaying sharp details and full denticles. Choice and impressive. NGC MS-61." The bishopric of Würzburg was an ecclesiastical state in the heart of Germany. The bishop issued this commemorative ten ducats in 1707, along with a two, three and five ducats, all rare. The territory was annexed to Bavaria in 1803.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 35 g, 0.986 fine gold, 1.109 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-3679; KM-251; Helmschrott-467; Piloty-1078.
