Westphalia 1811 thaler rev JElsen 121-1012.jpg
kingdom of Westphalia in 1812, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1012 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €600 (about US$961 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, WESTPHALIE, Jérôme Napoléon (1807-1813), AR Ausbeutetaler, 1811 C, Cassel. Grande tête. Rare. Fines traces d'ajustage. presque Superbe. (Germany, duchy of Westphalia, Jerome Napoleon)"

This type was struck in Cassel 1811 only. Jerome, Napoleon's brother, served him faithfully, stripping his domain of men and money for the Russian campaign. The kingdom collapsed after the battle of Leipzig. At the Congress of Vienna, the area was restored to its former lords, Hannover and Prussia.

Recorded mintage: unknown but about triple the price of the regular issue.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, .751 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 119, J., 19; A.K.S., 24; Dav-934.
