West African States 1972 500 francs
This specimen was lot 1339 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $78. The catalog description[1] noted, "WEST AFRICAN STATES: AR 500 francs CFA, 1972, 10th Anniversary of the Monetary Union, with original case of issue, a fantastic example, PCGS graded Specimen MS66, ex Charles W. Lueders III Collection." The West African States are a currency union of the former colonies of French West Africa, now independent but still economically weak. Members include Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), Senegal, Niger, Ivory Coast, Dahomey (now Benin) and Togo. This 500 francs commemorates the tenth anniversary of its establishment. It was struck in Paris.
