Walnut Park National Bank, California
small size $5
This specimen was lot 18361 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $4,312.50. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Second Ever Public Offering, Walnut Park, CA - $5 1929 Ty. 1 The Walnut Park NB Ch. # 12572. The Colver collection contained two examples from this bank, which, although chartered in 1924, elected to issue only Series 1929 examples. It then issued for less than three years before entering receivership in January of 1932. That pair represents the only notes ever to be publicly offered from this obscure bank, and for years they were the only two notes known. We've not seen the alleged third example from here, and, if it exists, it's never been offered for sale. Lowell obtained this piece, which is by a considerable margin the finest note known from this location, at the Colver sale for what we thought was an outrageous bargain price of $2420. In the more than five years since, there have been no other offerings, no additions to the census, and no opportunities for collectors to add any notes from here to their holdings. As we said in the Colver catalogue, "If there is a neater Los Angeles area small note for condition, rarity and desirability, we have yet to see it." We're still waiting. Extremely Fine. Ex-Charles Colver collection sale, lot 2102."
small size $10
This specimen was lot 10519 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Walnut Park, California. $10 1929 Ty. 1. Fr. 1801-1. The Walnut Park NB. Charter #12572. PMG Very Fine 25. This newly discovered note now makes just five notes reported on this sole small size only issuing bank. While its technical grade is a Very Fine 25, it faces up considerably nicer. A popular Los Angeles County location, and one that rarely is offered up for sale." Wikipedia comments, "Walnut Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County...adjacent to Florence-Graham, Huntington Park and South Gate. The population was 15,966 at the 2010 census, down from 16,180 at the 2000 census."
