Venice (1741-42)-FP ducatone Dav-1545
This specimen was lot 30135 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy. Venice. Pietro Grimani Ducatone ND (1741-1742)-FP AU53 NGC. Displaying an aged metal tone over surfaces retaining an appealing, glossy finish. Some doubling is noted in the peripheral legends. A lesser-seen type worthy of great consideration in this scarce conditional state. From the Cape Coral Collection of European Crowns." By this period, Venice was a ghost of her former power, surviving only on the sufferance of her Austrian and Turkish neighbors. Ducatoni (= 124 soldi) were issued to this standard until the end of the republic. Other large silver coins included ducati (= 90 soldi), talleri (= 110 soldi), scudi (= 140 soldi) as well as a variety of gold coins, especially ducats. This is the only ducatone of this ruler. Other silver crowns include Dav-1544 (scudo), -1546 (double ducatone) and -1547 (ducato).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.10 g, 0.948 fine silver.
