Venice (1681-82)-PM 1/2 ducato
This specimen was lot 1745 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Venedig, Alvise Contarini, 1676-1684. 1/2 Ducato da 62 soldi o. J. (nach 1680), Venezia. Sigle PM (Piero Malipiero). Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. (Italy, republic of Venice, Alvise Contarini, 1676-84, undated half ducato of 62 soldi, Venice mint, initials PM. Rare in this condition. NGC MS64, Cabinet piece.)"
About 1660, the ducato was reduced in weight from 28.10 g to 23.4 g and the half ducato and quarter ducato shrank proportionately. Altho undated, this one can be dated to 1681-82 by the term of office of mintmaster Piero Malipiero.
