Venice (1625-29) 2 scudi d'oro Fr-1460
This specimen was lot 30188 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $4,112.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Venice. Giovanni Corner I gold 2 Scudi d'oro ND (1625-29), AU55 NGC. A scarce and high-quality piece. The last piece auctioned publicly was sold by Stack's in January, 2011 for a hammer of $4,500. The present example is arguably nicer, as it does not have the same die breaks as the other. A very solid Italian multiple in gold." As a rule, Venetian coins were not dated and can only be identified as to ruler. Other gold coins for this ruler include a scudo d'oro (Fr-1461), zecchino (Fr-1297), half zecchino (Fr-1298) and quarter zecchino (Fr-1299). The Corner family furnished many doges, including Marco (1365-68), Giovanni (shown here), Francesco (1656) and Giovanni II (1709-22).
