Venice (1339-42) grosso
This specimen was lot 33351 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Venice. Bartolomeo Gradenigo (1339-1342) Grosso ND MS63 PCGS, Venice mint. • BA • GRADONICO • | • S • M • VЄNЄTI •, St. Mark (left) and Doge (right) standing facing, holding banner between them, DVX to left of banner (stacked) / Christ Pantocrator enthroned facing; IC-XC to either side. A nearly perfect example of type exhibiting a fully-centered strike, round flan, and lovely die polish lines. A very pleasing gold and turquoise plumage of colors blooms forth from the surfaces, clothing St. Mark, the Doge, and Christ alike in flowing, celestial robes of many colors." One grosso was 32 denari or 2/15 of a lira.
