Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74701

This specimen was lot 74701 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "VENEZUELA. Copper 2 Centavos Essai (Pattern), 1863-E. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Red Brown." Numista states that the portrait is of José Antonio Páez (1790-1873, president 1830-35, 1839-43, 1861-63) but there is a possibility that it is of his successor Juan Crisóstomo Falcón Zavarce (1820-70, president 1863-68). The bust was also used on a one centavo, four reales and ten reales. The legend "CIUDADANO ESCLARECIDO" translates as, "Enlightened Citizen."
