Vaud 1817 batzen
This specimen was lot 3041 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "VAUD: Canton, BI batzen, 1817, a superb example, PCGS graded MS65." This type was struck 1804-20. Forty batzen made a thaler. After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. Not until 1850 would a unified confederation mint her own coins and terminate the local issues. Formerly a Bernese bailiwick, Vaud joined the Swiss Confederation as an independent canton in 1803.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.55 g, 0.160 fine silver, 25 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-8, C-4.
