This specimen was lot 33934 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "John Paul II gold Proof 'The Alpha and the Omega' 100000 Lire Anno XXIII 2001-R PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, Rome mint. A gem specimen of undiluted beauty." Coins are issued for the Vatican City in symbolic amounts but as they are eagerly saved as souvenirs by tourists, they are not in short supply for collectors. The lira was retired in 1999 when Italy joined the euro; this is the final issue. It was accompanied by a 50,000 lire (KM 390).
