This type was struck for Pius XII in the last year of his pontificate. Altho not mintmarked, it was struck at Rome for the Vatican. He died on October 9, and there was just time to issue a sede vacante 500 lire before the end of the year. The lira was retired in 1999 when Italy joined the euro.

Recorded mintage: 20,000.

Specification: 11 g, 0.835 fine silver, 29 mm diameter.
