Chile H3049-30609r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30609 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Valdivia. Republic 8 Reales 1822 XF45 NGC, Chinumpa mint. A very rare type struck under siege by the Republican army, with evenly-patinated steel surfaces and simple, yet attractive devices that are surrounded by vast expanses. The obverse details are deeply-impressed for the type and the reverse shows wear that is commensurate with the grade and typical for the issue. Notable as the plate coin used in the Medina reference, and currently bested by only one other certified example at NGC. At the time of the Chilean war of independence, Valdivia was the southernmost point of royal control, and according to the SCWC, this issue of emergency coinage was struck by Don Antonio Adriazola by order of the governor to pay the local garrison during a shortage of specie."

The Don also issued billon one real and two reales.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon.

Catalog reference: KM 3.
