Unterwalden 1811 1/2 batzen
This specimen was lot 5376 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$658 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Nidwalden | misc, Halbbatzen 1811, Luzern. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. Überprägungsspuren. (canton of Nidwalden, half batzen of 1811, Luzern mint. Rare in this condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Overstruck.)"
Unterwalden, being half Catholic and half Protestant, was divided into half cantons, Nidwalden and Obwalden. The coinage of the canton of Nidwalden is not so common and this one year type is no exception. The series of 1812, which included a half batzen and a five batzen, is the last from the canton.
Recorded mintage: 12,000.
Specification: billon, this specimen 2.04 g.
