Sincona sale 102, lot 5410

This specimen was lot 5410 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$490 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ. Obwalden. 20 Kreuzer 1742, Sarnen. Standeswappen mit damasziertem Teil. Rv. Variante mit Wertziffer auf der Brust des Doppeladlers. Schräg gerippter Rand. Gutes sehr schön. (Switzerland, half canton of Obwalden, twenty kreuzer of 1742, Sarnen mint, Obverse: Coat of arms with a damascened chief; reverse: Variety with the value on the eagle's breast. Good Very Fine.)"

Unterwalden was one of the three original cantons forming the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Far from the main channels of commerce, her coinage is scanty and rare. Unterwalden was divided into the "half cantons" of Obwalden and Nidwalden. This twenty kreuzer was struck 1726, 1728, 1736 and 1742-43 and is fairly common in worn condition. Another twenty kreuzer of 1742, featuring the praying St. Nicholas von Flüe, is not listed in the SCWC.
