The first specimen was lot 18116 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $920. The catalog description[1] noted, "San Diego, CA - $5 1902 Date Back Fr. 596 The United States NB Ch. # (P)10391. A bit rough at the top, with some splits, and a bit wallet stained on the back. Still, this is a scarce and very popular bank, especially in large size. Fine. Ex-Philip Krakover collection sale, lot 454."

The second specimen was lot 20292 Heritage auction 3557 (Long Beach, CA, September 2017), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted,

"San Diego, CA - $5 1902 Date Back Fr. 596 The United States NB Ch. # (P)10391. A very popular bank, which has had only two large size offerings since 2010, according to Track & Price. In 1973, this bank, owned by C. Arnholt Smith, a friend and close advisor to President Richard Nixon, collapsed in what was the largest bank failure to that date. Smith, who had owned the bank since purchasing a controlling interest in 1933, was later convicted of income tax evasion and grand larceny. Some repair work is noted on this PMG Very Fine 25 Net example, yet it retains a pleasing appearance with good color and signatures."
