This specimen was lot 2502 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "UNITED STATES: AV 5 dollars, 1989-P, Brilliant Proof, American Gold Eagle series, 1/10 troy ounce, housed in protective plastic capsule." A commemorative gold five dollars was issued in 1989 for the bicentennial of Congress (KM 226) but only from the West Point mint. The gold tenth ounce, introduced in 1986, is still in production. The uncirculated strikes do not bear the "P" mintmark, which was dropped after 1993.
Recorded mintage: 264,790 plus 84,647 proofs.
Specification: 3.39 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.100 troy oz AGW, 16.5 mm diameter.
