Sincona Auction 103, lot 1042

This specimen was lot 1042 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$762 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"USA, 5 Cents 1886, Philadelphia. Liberty head type. Seltener Jahrgang. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Rare date, Very Fine-Extremely Fine.)"

After the clandestinely produced 1913 and the scarce 1885, this is the key date among Liberty Nickels. In the decades prior to World War One, the nickel was probably the hardest working denomination.

Recorded mintage: 3,326,000 plus 4,290 proofs.

Specification: 5 g, copper-nickel, 21.2 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Charles Barber, this specimen 4.75 g.

Catalog reference: KM 112.
