This specimen was lot 1179 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,906 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ÉTATS-UNIS, AV 10 dollars, 1883 CC, Carson City. Rare. Petits coups. (United States, gold ten dollars of 1883, Carson City mint. Rare, minor ricks, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This specimen is one of a type struck at the Carson City 1870-84, 1890-93. Issues are also recorded from New Orleans (1841-60, 1879-1906), San Francisco (1854-89, 1892-1907), Philadelphia mint (1839-1907) and Denver (1906-07). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. This date is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 12,000, a scarce date.

Specification: 16.71 g, 0.900 fine gold, .483 troy oz AGW, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
