United States 1860-C 5 dollars
The year 1860 saw Charlotte Half Eagle production plummet to under 15,000 coins, from rather consistent mintages above/around 30,000 the previous years. The reverse was the same used in 1859, hence all examples show significant blurriness/weakness. This is most likely due to improperly annealing the reverse die in preparations for the 1859 production. Many surviving examples exhibit deep, detracting marks, with many conspicuous hits on the portrait (much like the 1861-C Half Eagle). This example shows the typical green-gold coloration with crusty patina covering original/subdued mint luster.
Recorded Mintage: 14,813.
Specification: 21.6 mm diameter, 8.359 g, 0.900 fine gold, .2418 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
