United States 1834 2-5 dollars rev DSLR.jpg

The classic head quarter eagle was struck 1834-39 at Philadelphia (shown here), Charlotte and New Orleans. It superseded the turban head type which had 6½% more gold. The older type was promptly melted, rendering it very rare today. The classic head is scarce compared to the coronet head quarter eagle, largely because the latter type was in production for 68 years.

Recorded mintage: 4,000 turban head plus 112,234 classic head.

Specification: 4.18 g, .899 fine gold, .120 troy oz AGW, 18.2 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by William Kneass.

Catalog reference: KM 56.
