This specimen was lot 3185 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$194 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Vereinegte Staaten. 1 Cent 1817. 13 stars, close date. Fast FDC. Feine bläuliche Patina. (United States, one cent of 1817, 13 stars, close date. About uncirculated, Nicely bluish toned.)"
This type, called the "matron head cent" or "coronet cent", was struck 1816-39. The dies were individually made and many varieties exist. For 1817, obverses with 13 and 15 stars exist, with the 15 star obverse awarded a premium. During the 1840's steam presses were adopted and dies were hubbed, reducing the extent of variation.
Recorded mintage: 3.948,400 (all varieties).
Specification: 10.89 g, copper, 28-29 mm diameter, this specimen 10.82 g.
