Sincona sale 87, lot 3244

This specimen was lot 3244 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$13,466 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"USA, 5 Dollars 1807, Philadelphia. Liberty head type. Turban bust left. Very rare in this condition. NGC MS61."

This specimen was offered again as lot 1134 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$12,058 including buyers' fees). The first five dollar gold pieces were struck in 1795. This capped bust type was struck 1807-34. Mintages were low, as the mint had little access to bullion, and the output was quickly bought up by speculators and exported, as the coin had more than five dollars worth of gold. The type is rare and expensive today. Turban head half eagles also exist for 1807.

Recorded mintage: 51,605, a common date for the type.

Specification: 8.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 25 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 38, Fr-132.
