Sincona Auction 103, lot 1010

This specimen was lot 1010 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$4,572 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"USA, 1 Dollar 1797, Philadelphia. Draped bust type. Large letters. Selten. Fast sehr schön. Kratzer. (Rare, About Very Fine, Scratches.)"

This type of 1795-98 is very scarce. This example shows nine stars on the left and seven on the right for the sixteen states then in the Union. The admission of more states made the addition of more stars impratical, so later dates show only thirteen stars. The "large letters" variety refers to the reverse. In weight, alloy and module, the early United States dollars were close copies of the Spanish American portrait eight reales circulating in large numbers. The reverse was redesigned to use the heraldic eagle in 1798 and struck in that form through 1803.
