United Arab Emirates 1984 25 fils
This specimen was lot 1013 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: 25 fils, 1984/AH1404, PCGS Specimen pop-5/3, total 9, PCGS graded Specimen 66, ex King's Norton Mint Collection." This type, featuring a gazelle on the reverse, was struck intermittently 1973, 1982-90, 1995-98. The region, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. The economy is entirely dependent on oil.
