This specimen was lot 21428 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. 1000 Dirhams, 1976. PCGS PROOF-65 Gold Shield. This proof Gem, struck to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the United Arab Emirates, offers incredible brilliance and just some light areas of haziness." This NCLT was accompanied by a gold 500 dirhams (KM 12). Circulating coinage of this state does not extend above a copper-nickel five dirhams.
Recorded mintage: 12,500 proofs.
Specification: 39.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, 40 mm diameter (same standard as a British five pounds).
