SB225-75782r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75782 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Tuscany. 5 Quattrini, 1830. Florence Mint. Leopoldo II. PCGS AU-58." This type is listed for 1826-30. Montenegro gives its composition as copper but this specimen appears to be billon. These obscure little Italian states coins don't catalog for much but are very difficult to find. Altho the 1829 has a higher mintage, this appears to be the commonest date. Leopold, a junior Hapsburg prince, ruled Tuscany until it was incorporated into the united kingdom of Italy in 1859-60.

Recorded mintage: 50,200.

Specification: 3.89 g, billon, 23.5 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM-C65; Mont-379.
