Tuscany 1771 francescone Dav-1514
This specimen was lot 2756 in Goldberg sale 109 (Los Angeles, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Tuscany. Francescone (10 Paoli), 1771. Peter Leopold, 1765-1790. Sharply struck with considerable amount of original mint luster. NGC graded AU-55." This type is listed for 1771-77 and is inexpensive for an Italian crown. There is also Dav-1510 for 1771 with a different reverse. Peter Leopold was the second son of Maria Theresia of Austria and emperor Joseph II's brother. He became emperor himself on the death of Joseph in 1790 but his reign lasted only until his death in 1792. In 1800, Tuscany was occupied by the French and not returned to Hapsburg rule until 1815.
