Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 21399

This specimen was lot 21399 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Tuscany. Piastre, 1585. Francesco I de' Medici. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. A well struck and fairly deeply toned example, this piece features light, even wear, with some golden hints highlighting the legends and devices, and no obtrusive marks. A very difficult type to encounter in a stellar state of preservation such as is seen here. From the Jasmine Collection." After the Florentine republic collapsed, it was reconstituted as the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, ruled by the Medicis until 1723. The type is listed in Davenport for 1577-85. Like most Italian crowns of the sixteenth century, it is rare.
